Details

The third player in Pittsburgh Penguins franchise history to reach the 50 goal plateau after Jean Pronovost and Pierre Larouche, Rick Kehoe held the team record with 55 markers until Mario Lemieux scored 70 in 1987-88. Lemieux then set the current team record of 85 the following year.

Goal number 50 in 1980-81 came in a 7-6 loss to the Edmonton Oilers at Northlands Coliseum on March 16, 1981. Rick scored unassisted on Edmonton goalie Eddie Mio at the 15:00 mark of the second period. Gregg Sheppard from the Penguins and Mark Messier from the Oilers both had hat tricks in the game.

Kehoe led the Penguins with 88 points in 1980-81, a five point edge over Randy Carlyle. He tied for fourth in the NHL for goal scoring with Wayne Gretzky of the Oilers, 13 behind leader Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders.

Rick was awarded the Lady Byng Trophy that year, the only major individual accolade of his NHL career. He edged out Gretzky, the previous year’s winner. Kehoe was assessed just three minor penalties over the full 80 game schedule. Over 906 career regular season games, he sat just 120 PIM and maxed out with 22 in 1974-75, his first year with the Penguins.

Between 1971-72 and 1984-85, Rick Kehoe played 906 regular season and 39 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was originally a second round pick by the Leafs at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft out of the Hamilton Red Wings. Rick went on to a lengthy career behind the bench in Pittsburgh.
