Details

Randy’s 67 assists in 1980-81 led the Pittsburgh Penguins and also placed him in a tie for seventh spot in the NHL with Blake Dunlop of the St. Louis Blues. He led the team again in 1981-82 with 64 helpers. With increased offense in the league, that total did not place him within the top 10.

Winning the 1980-81 Norris Trophy was a very tight battle. Carlyle had just a slight edge in voting over Denis Potvin of the New York Islanders and Larry Robinson of the Montreal Canadiens. Randy even grabbed a couple of votes for the Hart Trophy for the NHL’s most valuable player.

After a great junior career with the Sudbury Wolves from 1973-74 to 1975-76, Carlyle was a second round pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft. He played sparingly for the Buds over his first two years in the league but his career took off after a June 14, 1978 trade sent him to the Pens. He was shipped with George Ferguson in exchange for Dave Burrows.

His time in Pittsburgh came to an end on March 5, 1984 when he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets. He would finish out his NHL playing career with the club. In all, between 1976-77 and 1992-93, Carlyle played in 1,055 regular season and 69 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Penguins and Jets.
