Details
There’s a trivia question on the back of this 1965-66 Topps Reg Fleming hockey card, asking how many penalty minutes he accumulated in a single game to set the (at the time) NHL record. The answer is 37. This happened on October 19, 1960 in a game at Madison Square Garden, 2-0 loss to the New York Rangers. Reg had fights with Dean Prentice and Eddie Shack to go with a couple of misconducts and a minor penalty.
Of course, the 70’s and 80’s happened and this mark doesn’t even place him in the top 40. In fact, 44 players have had games of 40 PIM or more. The record most likely forever belong to Randy Holt and his 67 penalty minute game with the Los Angeles Kings in 1979.
Fleming came to Chicago from the Montreal Canadiens through a June 7, 1960 trade with Bob Courcy, Ab McDonald and Cecil Hoekstra for Lorne Ferguson and Terry Gray. Reg played just three games with the Habs, all in 1959-60.
Midway through the 1965-66 NHL season, Fleming was traded to the New York Rangers in exchange for John McKenzie. On February 12, 1966, he put it to the team that traded him. In a 9-2 win at Madison Square Garden, Reg had a four-point game on a goal and assists on goals by Vic Hadfield, Earl Ingarfield and Jean Ratelle. He also had a fight with Ed Westfall for a Gordie Howe Hat Trick.
Between 1959-60 and 1970-71, Reg Fleming played 749 regular season and 50 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres. He also appeared in 120 regular season and 12 playoff games in the WHA, all with the Chicago Cougars.
