Details
Red Kelly’s Norris Trophy in 1953-54, the first year the award was introduced, turned out to be his only win. Doug Harvey of the Montreal Canadiens dominated the award over seven of the following eight seasons. Kelly’s run of three consecutive Lady Byng Trophy wins would end after 1953-54 but he would win the award one more time over his NHL career, in 1960-61 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Kelly would be selected as an NHL All-Star in eight consecutive seasons, six as a First Team All-Star and twice as a Second Team All-Star. All eight of those selections were with the Detroit Red Wings between 1950-51 and 1956-57
In 1954-55, Red finished second to Harvey in voting for the Norris. More importantly, he helped the Red Wings to a Stanley Cup championship. He would win four with Detroit and four later with the Maple Leafs. He has the most Stanley Cup wins by a player who did not play for the Montreal Canadiens.
In that 1954-55 campaign, Kelly’s offensive abilities were on display in a pair of four point games. The first was on January 30, 1955 with four assists in a 7-1 win over the Canadiens. In the second, on March 3 in a 6-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, Red had a goal and three helpers. In that game, he set up the final two of Gordie Howe‘s third period natural hat trick. The first of those two was a shorthanded marker.
Between 1947-48 and 1966-67, Red Kelly played 1,316 regular season and 164 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969.
