Details
On December 30, 1965, Pit Martin was traded straight up for Parker MacDonald. After spending much of the start of 1965-66 in the AHL with the Pittsburgh Hornets, Martin hit the ground running with the Bruins. In one of his early games with Boston, he had a four goal game and on February 16, 1966, took it to the team that traded him just a month and half before.
The Boston Bruins were hosting the Detroit Red Wings at the Boston Garden on that night. The two teams were at opposite ends of the spectrum with Detroit sitting at 25-16-9 while the Bruins were battling the New York Rangers for the NHL basement with a record of 13-30-6. Seeing his old teammates lit a fire under Pit and he scored three goals while adding an assist on Ron Stewart’s game winning goal in a 5-4 victory. He was relentless with the Detroit goalies, firing 13 shots at the tandem of Roger Crozier and Hank Bassen.
1966-67 would be the only full season in Boston for Martin. In the off-season, he was part of the famous blockbuster trade that sent Pit, Jack Norris and Gilles Marotte to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Ken Hodge, Phil Esposito and Fred Stanfield. He would shine with the Hawks, putting up seven seasons of 20 or more goals, topping out with 32 in 1975-76.
Between 1961-62 and 1978-79, Pit Martin appeared in 1,101 regular season and 100 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Bruins, Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks. He was the Bill Masterton Trophy winner in 1969-70.
