Details

Pierre Larouche would follow up that 1975-76 performance with another 50 goal season in 1979-80 with the Montreal Canadiens. Larouche scored exactly 50 while assisting on 41 for 91 points. He tied Guy Lafleur for the team lead in goal scoring while finishing in a three-way tie for seventh in the NHL with Lafleur and Reg Leach.

Larouche started his major junior career with the Quebec Remparts but was shifted over to the Sorel Eperviers midway through his first of two seasons in the QMJHL. In his second, 1973-74, he had one for the ages with 251 points on 94 goals and 157 assists. This performance got him selected eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft.

He arrived in Montreal via a November 29, 1977 trade with the Penguins that Peter Marsh also go to the Canadiens in exchange for Pete Mahovlich and Peter Lee. Yes, an “All-Pete” trade. After an injury shortened 1978-79 campaign, Pierre became the fifth different player in Montreal Canadiens history to reach the 50 goal plateau. Just Stephane Richer has accomplished the feat since.

Included in his 50 goals in 1979-80 were a four-goal game and a hat trick. His four goal game came against his former team, the Penguins. The hat trick came against the Winnipeg Jets on November 22, 1979 in a 7-0 home win at the Forum. Larouche scored three on Winnipeg goalie Pierre Hamel while also assisting on a pair of goals by Steve Shutt for a five point game.

Between 1974-75 and 1987-88, Pierre Larouche played 812 regular season and 64 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens, Hartford Whalers and New York Rangers. Pierre was a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Habs.
