Card Notes

All previous scoring records for a single season went down the drain when “Espo” exploded for 76 goals and 152 points two seasons ago.

En Français

Il battit tous les records de buts et de points en une seule saison quand il réussit 76 buts et 152 points il ya a deux ans. Un des gars les plus robustes dans le hockey. Il deviendra sûrement un des grands compteurs de l’histoire du hockey.

Details

In that 1970-71 NHL season when Phil Esposito turned the hockey world upside down with his 76 goals and 152 points, it was in tandem with Bobby Orr who also set a record with his 102 assists. But, it shouldn’t be forgotten that, despite being known for goal scoring, Esposito also set a record with his 77 assists in 1968-69. That record was broken the following year by Orr.

1971-72 wasn’t bad either. Esposito scored 66 and assisted on 67 for 133 points to earn his third of five Art Ross Trophy wins. That total was powered by four hat tricks and three five point games. Despite the performance, he was just third in the voting for the Hart Trophy behind winner Bobby Orr, runner-up Ken Dryden and just ahead of Jean Ratelle.

Phil would never top that 1970-71 performance but came close in 1973-74 with 68 goals and 145 points. This was the third of four times reaching the 60 goal plateau. Over his career, he had six seasons with more than 100 points.

Between 1963-64 and 1980-81, Phil Esposito played 1,282 regular season and 130 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. Along with his five Art Ross Trophy wins, he was a Hart Trophy recipient twice and helped the Bruins to two Stanley Cup titles. Esposito was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
