Details

Phil Esposito was just getting started. He would not surpass his record 76 goals set in 1970-71 but would score 197 goals over the three seasons from 1970-71 to 1972-73. Four times since, a player has scored more than 76, two belong to current record holder Wayne Gretzky. Teemu Selanne and Alex Mogilny each had 76 goals seasons while Brett Hull and Mario Lemieux sit between Esposito and Gretzky.

His streak of First Team All-Star selections would reach six seasons, sandwiched by a Second Team pick at the start and finish of that stretch. The two time Hart Trophy winner also took home the Art Ross Trophy five times.

In 1971-72, Phil’s numbers dropped but to a level that would have been still record breaking just a year before. He scored 66 goals and assisted on 67 for 133 points. In the playoffs, he added 24 points in 15 games, helping the Boston Bruins to their second Stanley Cup championship in three years.

Between 1963-64 and 1980-81, Phil Esposito played 1,282 regular season and 130 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984 and his jersey number 7 was retired by the Bruins in 1987.
