Son of former NHL player Max McNab. Attended University of Denver before turning to professional hockey. A rangy, free-skating center, he was the Sabres sixth round pick in 1972.

1975-76 would be the final season with the Buffalo Sabres for Peter McNab before moving to the Boston Bruins. He put up a decent 24 goals and 56 points over 79 games. His best game of the season came on October 25, 1975 at Detroit Olympia against the Red Wings when he was in on four of Buffalo’s five goals in a 5-3 win.
McNab opened the scoring at 3:44 of the first with his second of the season, assisted by Jacques Richard and Jim Lorentz. Peter scored again early in the third while also adding a pair of assists. His second helper of the game was on Jacques Richard’s game winner in the second, also assisted by Jerry Korab.
With the Bruins, his game jumped to a higher level. In his first six seasons in Boston, McNab scored no less than 35 goals. His career best 41 came in 1977-78. In the previous season, his first with the Bruins, he had a career high 86 points.
Between 1973-74 and 1986-87, Peter McNab played 954 regular season and 107 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils. Often a candidate for the Lady Byng Trophy, Peter was runner-up to Butch Goring in 1977-78.
Peter’s father Max McNab played 128 regular season and 25 playoff games in the NHL between 1947-48 and 1950-51, all with the Detroit Red Wings. In 1954-55, he was the recipient of the George Leader Cup as the WHL’s most valuable player. That year, as player / coach of the New Westminster Royals, Max finished sixth in scoring with 81 points. The league was led that year by the Edmonton Flyers duo of Bronco Horvath and John Bucyk.
