Details
It’s an offensively strong team when your second leading scorer has 117 points. Pete Mahovlich finished just two points behind team leader Guy Lafleur with Lafleur playing ten less games. The two finished 4th and 5th in the race for the Art Ross Trophy. Mahovlich placed third with his 82 assists, seven behind co-leaders Bobby Orr and Bobby Clarke.
1975-76 wouldn’t be quite as good but Pete reached the 100 point plateau for the second and last time during his NHL career with 105. He was 20 points behind team and league leader Lafleur. His 71 assists were second to just Bobby Clarke.
In 1975-76, one of his seven game winning goals came shorthanded. In a January 17, 1976 game against the Los Angeles Kings at the Montreal Forum, Peter opened the scoring with his 20th of the season in the first period. The goal was scored on Gary Edwards, assisted by Larry Robinson and Rick Chartraw.
His second in that game was 18:05 of the second, assisted by Don Awrey. That goal was scored shorthanded with Guy Lapointe in the box for high sticking, making the score 3-1 in the 4-2 Montreal win.
Between 1965-66 and 1980-81, Pete Mahovlich played 884 regular season and 88 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a four time Stanley Cup champion with the Habs. He was also a two time Calder Cup champion in the AHL, winning with the 1966-67 Pittsburgh Hornets and the 1980-81 Adirondack Red Wings.
