Card Notes

The number one draft choice in the 1971 Amateur Draft. Guy had pressure built all around him as he started the 1971-72 campaign because so many looked upon him as the immediate replacement for Jean Beliveau. After the first third of the season, Guy was ahead of the pace of Beliveau’s first full season in the NHL. Destined to be a super-star.

Details

Guy Lafleur had a pretty outstanding rookie season with the Montreal Canadiens in 1971-72 and, for the most part, jumped right into the skates of Jean Beliveau. Lafleur scored 29 and assisted on 35 for 64 points over 73 games for the Habs. Surprisingly, he got no consideration for the Calder Trophy. That award was given to teammate Ken Dryden with Buffalo’s Rick Martin not far behind.

It was not at all a risk to say that Guy was destined to be a superstar. He was coming off two years of junior hockey in the QMJHL with the Quebec Remparts where he scored 103 and 130 goals. In his final season, he had 79 assists to go along with those 130 goals for a whopping 209 points. He was a pretty easy choice as first overall pick for the Habs.

Lafleur’s numbers kept in a holding pattern for his first three years with the Canadiens. However, in 1974-75 he offense exploded and he started a run of six consecutive seasons with at least 50 goals and no less than 119 points. He topped out 1976-77 with 136 points and in 1977-78 with 60 goals.

Between 1971-72 and 1990-91, Guy Lafleur appeared in 1,126 regular season and 128 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens, New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques. Guy was a three time winner of the Art Ross Trophy and won the Hart Trophy twice. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988.
