Details
Even though he played an important role in the 1966-67 Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup championship, Pete Stemkowski would play just part of one more year with the club before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings. On March 3, 1968, Pete was traded to Motown, along with Carl Brewer, Frank Mahovlich and Garry Unger for Doug Barrie, Paul Henderson, Floyd Smith and Norm Ullman.
In that 1967 Stanley Cup run, Stemkowski totaled 12 points in 12 games on five goals and seven assists. That was the same number of goals he scored for Toronto over 36 games in 1964-65 and one more than he scored over 56 regular season games in 1965-66.
Two of those five playoff goals were game winners. In game 5 of the semi-final with the Chicago Blackhawks, He scored at 2:11 of the third, assisted by Bob Pulford and Jim Pappin, to give Toronto a 3-2 lead in what would be a 4-2 win. He also assisted on the opening goal of the game by Mike Walton.
In the final series against the Montreal Canadiens, Stemkowski scored the opening goal in game 2, a 3-0 shutout win at the Montreal Forum. In the following game, he assisted on the game winner in overtime, scored by Bob Pulford in the second overtime. He also scored in the first period on Montreal goalie Rogie Vachon for a two goal game.
Stemkowski played 967 regular season and 83 playoff games in the National Hockey League between 1963-64 and 1977-78 with the Maple Leafs, Red Wings, New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings. He was a 20+ goal scorer five times, putting up a career high of 25 in both 1969-70 with Detroit and 1973-74 with New York.
