Details

There’s a slight ERROR on the back of this 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee Peter Mahovlich hockey card, almost more than a typo, than anything. Pete, and his brother Frank Mahovlich, were born in Timmins, Ontario, not Timmons as it’s spelled on the back.

As for the trivia snippet, the first game played at Joe Louis Arena was on December 27, 1979. The Red Wings hosted the St. Louis Blues and the visitors spoiled the party, handing Detroit a 3-2 loss. Brian Sutter of the Blues scored the first goal in the history of “The Joe” at 11:05 of the first period, assisted by Bernie Federko.

Pete Mahovlich played in that game for the Red Wings. He wasn’t involved in the scoring, the first goal by a Detroit player was scored by Dennis Sobchuk and assisted by Mike Foligno and Reed Larson. The second goal was scored by Danny Bolduc. However, Mahovlich was on the scoresheet for a second period scrap with Wayne Babych. The game featured two primetime goalies with Mike Liut in the nets for the Blues and Rogatien Vachon between the pipes for the Red Wings.

Between 1965-66 and 1980-81, Pete Mahovlich appeared in 884 regular season and 88 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a four time Stanley Cup champion with the Habs.
