Details
1973-74 was the first of three consecutive seasons for Pete Mahovlich playing each regular season game for the Montreal Canadiens. The Little M and Larry Robinson were the only players from the Habs to play in all 78 games in 73-74.
His seven game winning goals mentioned on the back of this 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee hockey card were a career best that he would equal two years later. Out of his 288 regular season goals in the NHL, 38 were game winners.
His penalty killing shows in Mahovlich’s four goals and two assists while shorthanded in 1973-74. His most impressive was scored on November 21, 1973 in a road game against the Minnesota North Stars. After tying the game at 3-3 with the only goal of the second period, Pete scored the game winner with just four seconds left in the third, shorthanded after his brother Frank Mahovlich was assessed a minor for hooking along with a ten minute misconduct.
With Frank off to the Toronto Toros of the WHA for the 1974-75 season, Pete had himself a career year with the Canadiens. His 82 assists led the team and his 117 points were two behind Guy Lafleur. He was third in the NHL for assists, seven behind co-leaders Bobby Orr and Bobby Clarke. In the race for the Art Ross Trophy, he was fifth, 18 points behind leader Orr.
Between 1965-66 and 1980-81, Pete Mahovlich played 884 regular season and 88 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Habs and topped the 100 point plateau twice.
