Pete Goegan would play most of the 1959-60 season in the WHL with the Edmonton Flyers but would be back up with the Red Wings for the playoffs. The following year, 1960-61, put in his first of only two complete seasons in the NHL and had a career year with 34 points from the blue line.
Between 1956-57 and 1968-69, Goegan played a modest 383 regular season games in the National Hockey League and 347 in the AHL. However, winning seemed to follow him. With the Red Wings, the team didn’t win the Stanley Cup with Pete on the roster but they reached the final in 1960-61 before losing to the Chicago Blackhawks. In 1962-63, Goegan’s only other full season in the league, the Red Wings again reached the final, this time losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In the American Hockey League, Pete has the distinction of helping three different teams to Calder Cup championships. In 1956-57, his first year of pro hockey, he helped the Cleveland Barons to the AHL title, taking out the Rochester Americans in the final.
In 1961-62, he split time between the Red Wings, New York Rangers and Springfield Indians. He was with the AHL club as they captured the Calder Cup with a win over the Buffalo Bisons in the final. In 1966-67, again splitting time between Detroit and the AHL, he helped the Pittsburgh Hornets to the title, taking out the Rochester Americans in the final.
Goegan played in the NHL between 1957-58 and 1967-68 with the Red Wings, Rangers and Minnesota North Stars. He was a ninth round pick, 50th overall, by the Stars at the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. He appeared in just 46 games with the club during their inaugural 1967-68 season.
