Card Notes

Two seasons ago, Parker developed into a sudden sensation, scoring 33 goals, after years as a journeyman forward. Started slowly last season but came on to pick up 21 more goals. Parker proved to be a slick wing mate for Gordie Howe’s set-ups.

Only five other Red Wings ever scored 33 goals in NHL season.

En Français

Parker compta 33 buts il y a deux ans après avoir travaillé fort durant des années à l’avant. Il débuta modestement l’an dernier et réussit à compter 21 buts. Parker est une aide précieuse pour les jeux de Gordie Howe.

Details

Prior to 1963-64, indeed, there were only five players that would score 33 or more in a season wearing the red and white of the Detroit Red Wings.

Of course, Gordie Howe is the obvious, surpassing this random plateau 10 times before this card was produced. The others:

1949-50Sid Abel34
1947-48Ted Lindsay33
1943-44Carl Liscombe36
1943-44Mud Bruneteau35

As for Parker MacDonald, his 33 goal performance in 1962-63 turned out to be a career high. His total dropped to just 13 in 1964-65 and he would never again reach the 20 goal plateau. The record for most goals in a single season by a Red Wing player stands at 65, accomplished by Steve Yzerman in 1988-89.

In his 1962-63 season, MacDonald finished fifth for goal-scoring in the NHL, just five behind leader and teammate Gordie Howe. His 16 power play and eight game winning goals led the league. Although he never recorded a hat trick over his NHL career, Parker had six 2-goal outings that year.

His best game in 62-63 came against the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 3, 1962 at Maple Leaf Gardens. MacDonald put a pair of goals past Toronto goalie Johnny Bower while assisting on markers by Doug Barkley and Howe for a four point game. The Wings won 7-3 with Howe putting up two, including the game winner.

Though his production dropped in 1964-65, Parker still provided some offense for Detroit. In a 5-4 win over the Canadiens on January 6, 1965 at the Montreal Forum, MacDonald recorded three assists. He had helpers on a pair of goals by Ron Murphy and a single by Alex Delvecchio.

Between 1952-53 and 1968-69, Parker MacDonald played 676 regular season and 75 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars.
