Details
The story of Normand Leveille is sad but incredibly inspiring. His NHL career was cut short nine games into the 1982-83 NHL season after suffering a brain aneurysm. Leveille recovered and founded the Centre Normand-Léveillé in Drummondville, Quebec. He remains president of that organization today.
In those nine games to start 1982-83, Normand was on a point per game pace with three goals and six assists. Two of those three goals were game winners. The first was scored on Denis Herron in a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The second came in a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks at Boston Garden. Leveille scored both goals for the Bruins, both assisted by Barry Pederson and both scored on Richard Brodeur. Just under two weeks later, it was against the Canucks at Pacific Coliseum where Normand would play his final game.
Over his short career, Normand Leveille played 75 regular season games, all with the Boston Bruins. He was the 14th overall pick by Boston at the 1981 NHL Entry Draft after starring with Chicoutimi for two years. In his final year of junior, Leveille scored 55 goals in 72 games while adding 26 points in just 12 playoff games.
