Card Notes

When a fellow kicking around the NHL for 15 years without showing any alarming signs of “slowing up”, one must assume this is a most unusual individual. If on the other hand, you don’t care to place much faith in assumptions a look at the record of Maurice Richard will convince you beyond a doubt that he is a player beyond and above all except a half dozen all time greats. And even these players are none too secure with the Rocket still rolling.

Details

1957-58 would be an injury shortened season for Maurice Richard, appearing in just 28 regular season games for the Montreal Canadiens before returning for the playoffs. However, he started the season strong, recording his only hat trick of the campaign in just Montreal’s third game of the year.

On October 13, 1957, the Habs were visiting the Red Wings at Detroit Olympia. Montreal won the game handily 6-0 with Charlie Hodge stopping 27 shots for the shutout. The Rocket scored three and also assisted on a third period goal by Dickie Moore for a four point night. Moore also had three goals and an assist on the night while Jean Beliveau and Henri Richard each had three assists. Terry Sawchuk was between the pipes for the Wings. For Maurice, it turned out to be the last hat trick of his NHL career.

Between 1942-43 and 1959-60, Maurice Richard appeared in 978 regular season and 133 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. The Hart Trophy winner in 1946-47 was an eight time Stanley Cup champion. The Rocket was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961.
