Card Notes

Although Bonin enjoyed only mild success in previous NHL play with Detroit and Boston, the friendly confines of the Montreal Forum are expected to act as a tonic for this tough and diligent worker, a tonic expected to produce much the same type of play that won him second place in the Quebec League’s scoring in ’56-57. Even his most fanatic admirers, and there are many in the Province of Quebec, would hesitate to class Marcel as a highly skilled workman.

Details

Looking at the numbers, there was nothing exceptional about the NHL career of Marcel Bonin. He played 450 games and had a career high of 17 goals in 1959-60, not numbers that will put you in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

However, Bonin certainly had his moments. Playing with the likes of Jean Beliveau and Dickie Moore will have that effect. On January 11, 1958, he put up a Gordie Howe Hat Trick before there was something known as a Gordie Howe Hat Trick. And, he did it in style.

The Habs were hosting the New York Rangers at the Montreal Forum and there were lots of goals. The Canadiens ended up winning 9-3 and Marcel had three goals and an assist for four points, along with a second period fight with Lou Fontinato. Without Beliveau in the lineup, it was Henri Richard and Dickie Moore combining with Bonin. Richard had three assists, two on Bonin goals. Moore had a goal and four assists. Marcel Paille was pelted with 45 shots in the New York nets.

On the historic night of March 7, 1959, Marcel figured prominently in a Jean Beliveau seven point night. The Habs thumped the visiting Detroit Red Wings 10-2 at the Forum. Beliveau recorded four goals and three assists for a seven point night, one off the team record. Marcel Bonin assisted on five goals, three by Beliveau and two by Dickie Moore. Dickie had a pretty impressive six point night with four assists and two goals on Detroit goalie Terry Sawchuk.

Between 1952-53 and 1961-62, Marcel Bonin played in 454 regular season and 50 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens. He was a four time Stanley Cup champion, once with Detroit and three times with the Habs.
