1962-63 would be the end of the line for Lou Fontinato. He played 63 games for the Montreal Canadiens and still spent 141 minutes in the penalty box, good for third in the NHL. He was a distant 132 PIM behind Howie Glover, the man who broke Lou’s record for most penalty minutes in a season. Carl Brewer of the Toronto Maple Leafs was between the two, 27 ahead of Fontinato.

Leapin’ Lou’s last NHL fight occurred on January 19, 1963 in a 5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings at the Montreal Forum. With 13 seconds left in the first period, Fontinato dropped the gloves with Norm Ullman with both receiving five for fighting.

It was also against Detroit when Lou had both his last NHL goal and assist. On February 17, 1963, the Habs beat the Red Wings 6-1 at Detroit Olympia. Fontinato scored the first goal of the game at 15:14 of the first period on Hank Bassen. He then assisted on a Jean Beliveau goal in the second frame that put Montreal up 3-0.

Between 1954-55 and 1962-63, Lou Fontinato played 536 regular season and 21 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens. On three occasions the Guelph, Ontario native led the NHL in penalty minutes.
