Card Notes
One of the league’s stiffer body checkers, Leo is built close to the ice and packs a real wallop. Excellent rusher, too, who can start and finish a play without assistance. Veteran of seven NHL seasons, coming up originally with the Maple Leafs.
En Français
Il est véritable artiste de la mise en échec. Il peut aussi déclencher des montées spectaculaires. Il en est à sa huitième saison dans la NHL. Il a débuté avec Toronto.
Details
He got his NHL start with the Toronto Maple Leafs but the bulk of Leo Boivin’s career was with the Boston Bruins. He came to Boston in a November 9, 1954 trade for Joe Klukay. In his first full year with the Maple Leafs, 1952-53, Boivin got some consideration for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. In a close battle, he finished third in voting behind winner Gump Worsley and runner-up Gord Hannigan.
Though the solid defender scored a modest 72 goals over 1,150 regular season games during his career, Leo was perfect when it came to penalty shots. He had just one but made good, scoring on Montreal goalie Charlie Hodge.
On January 4, 1964, the Canadiens hosted Boivin and the Bruins at the Forum. Leo was awarded a penalty shot at 12:30 of the second, allowing him to score Boston’s only goal of the game. The Habs won 5-1, powered by a two goal performance from Gilles Tremblay.
Between 1951-52 and 1969-70, Leo Boivin played 1,150 regular season and 54 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars. Never a Stanley Cup winner, Boivin played in the final series three times. Leo was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986.
