Details
This is an uncorrected error card. Lanny’s last name is spelled McDonald. O-Pee-Chee has printed his name MacDonald on both the front and back of the card. The full name is actually Lanny King McDonald.
The 139 point season in junior hockey referred to on the back of the card came in 1972-73 with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL. He scored 62 goals and added 77 assists over 68 games for the Tigers that year. This was a follow up to a 114 point performance in his first full season with the Tigers the year before.
Interestingly, he was not the team leader with Medicine Hat in 1972-73. Tom Lysiak led the club with 154 points on 58 goals and 96 assists. Other future NHLers on the club included: Ed Johnstone, Bob Gassoff, Barry Dean, Brad Gassoff, Jim McCrimmon and Bryan Maxwell.
Medicine Hat won the WCHL championship and McDonald was named an All-Star at right wing. Lanny added another 37 points in 17 playoff games.
