To this day, John Bucyk remains the all-time Boston Bruins goal scoring leader with 545. His 1,339 points place him second in franchise history behind just Ray Bourque. He would win the Lady Byng Trophy one more time, taking home the award in 1973-74. On three occasions, he was runner-up in voting for the Byng.
Bucyk’s 400th goal was scored on October 29, 1972 in a game at Boston Garden against the New York Islanders. He scored his fourth of the year and 399th of his career at 11:38 of the second period on Billy Smith, assisted by Mike Walton and Fred Stanfield. Goal number 400 was scored at the 15 minute mark of the third to make the score 9-1 for the Bruins. Again, the goal was scored on Smith with assists to Walton and Stanfield.
Between 1955-56 and 1977-78, John Bucyk played 1,540 regular season and 124 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. He had a career year in 1970-71 scoring 51 goals and assisting on 65 for 116 points. He placed second in goal scoring behind Phil Esposito and third in the race for the Art Ross Trophy behind leader Esposito and runner-up Bobby Orr.
