Details
John Wensink did score eight goals in the first seven games of the 1978-79 NHL season. The player, more known for his toughness, had a career year with 28 goals that season. In those first seven, Wensink had a pair of two goal games. The seventh game showed both sides of John’s game.
On October 24, 1978, the Bruins were visiting the St. Louis Blues at the Checkerdome. Boston won easily 7-2. Wensink scored his eighth of the season at 5:49 of the second period, assisted by Gary Doak and Bobby Schmautz, making the score 6-0. It was not the first time his name was on the scoresheet, however. At 14:43 of the first, he dropped the gloves with Wayne Babych. In the third period, he had his second fight of the night, this time squaring off with Harvey Bennett.
His offensive numbers dropped after that campaign and Wensink was abandoned by the Bruins after the 1979-80 playoffs. The Quebec Nordiques picked him up off waivers prior to the 1980-81 season. He would play 53 games for the Nordiques that year before moving off to the Colorado Rockies.
Between 1973-74 and 1982-83, John Wensink appeared in 403 regular season and 43 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Rockies and New Jersey Devils. John was a seventh round pick by the Blues at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft but played just three games with the club.
