Details

On January 6, 1981 in a home 6-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, John Tonelli scored a quarter of his 1980-81 total goals. Tonelli finished the season with a modest 20 goals and scored five of those in this match with the Leafs. It was a reversal of roles in the game with sniper Mike Bossy assisting on all six New York goals but putting zero pucks past Toronto goalie Jiri Crha.

Tonelli scored his 10th through 14th goals of the season. His hat trick goal, scored at 1:53 of the third period, made the score 4-1 and held on as the game winner. His fifth goal, scored with 42 seconds left in the game, went into the empty net.

For John, that was his first of five hat tricks over his NHL career. Three came with the Islanders while also having three goal games with the Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings later in his career. Interestingly, two of the five were scored against the Kings and one was with the Kings.

Between 1978-79 and 1991-92, John Tonelli played 1,028 regular season and 172 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Islanders, Calgary Flames, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks and Quebec Nordiques. Previous to the start of his NHL career, Tonelli played 224 regular season and 34 playoff games in the WHA with the Houston Aeros between 1975-76 and 1977-78.
