Details

Although John Ferguson was picked up by the Montreal Canadiens to be an enforcer, he could also provide offense. In his rookie 1963-64 season, Ferguson scored 18 goals and totaled 45 points over just 59 games. He finished second in Calder Trophy voting behind winner and teammate Jacques Laperriere and ahead of Terry Harper, another Habs rookie.

1968-69 would be a career year in pretty much all aspects of John’s game. He scored 29 goals, eclipsing his previous season high of 20. His 52 points were the best over his eight year career. Also, Ferguson’s 185 penalty minutes were a career high and placed him third in the NHL behind Forbes Kennedy and Jim Dorey. He added another 80 PIM in 14 playoff games as the Canadiens captured the Stanley Cup.

Between 1963-64 and 1970-71, John Ferguson appeared in 500 regular season and 85 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Montreal Canadiens. Over the eight years he was with the club, the Habs won the Stanley Cup championship five times.
