Card Notes

Magnificent physique inspired nickname of “the beast”. Johnny has had two 20-goals-plus years with Bruins after they got him from Detroit. The move reunited John with Edmonton line mates, Horvath and Stasiuk.

Details

With the Edmonton Flyers of the WHL in 1954-55, John Bucyk and Bronco Horvath combined for 80 goals and 198 points, leading the Flyers to a regular season and playoff championship. Horvath led the league with 50 goals while Bucyk finished tied for tenth with 30. In overall scoring, the duo was 1-2 in the WHL with Bronco leading with 110 points and Johnny placing second with 88.

After two years with the Detroit Red Wings, Bucyk was traded to the Boston Bruins on June 10, 1957 for Terry Sawchuk. He responded with seasons of 21 and 24 goals in his first two years with the club.

In his first game against the Red Wings in 1957-58, John scored a goal on Sawchuk at Detroit Olympia in a 5-1 Boston win. In that match, Bronco Horvath had two goals and two assists for four points while Vic Stasiuk had three points on a goal and two assists. Stasiuk’s goal was the game winner.

Between 1955-56 and 1977-78, John Bucyk played 1,540 regular season and 124 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. The two-time Lady Byng and Stanley Cup winner had his jersey number 9 retired by the Bruins in 1980 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
