Joe Watson would be a regular with the Boston Bruins in 1966-67, playing in 67 of the team’s 70 regular season games and he would never play in the minors again. It would be the last year for Joe with Boston, however.

Watson was selected 21st overall by the Philadelphia Flyers at the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. Ahead of him, the Flyers took two goalies, Bernie Parent and Doug Favell, and another defenseman in Ed Van Impe.

With Philadelphia, Joe was a major part of the franchise over the their first decade in the National Hockey League. He played with the club from 1967-68 until the end of 1977-78. Watson helped the Flyers to consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 1973-74 and 1974-75.

Between 1964-65 and 1978-79, Joe Watson appeared in 835 regular season and 84 playoff games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Colorado Rockies. Joe and his brother Jim Watson were both inducted into the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
