Undrafted, a four year veteran of the Boston College program, a star in the CHL for two and half years, Joe Mullen burst onto the NHL scene as a 24 year old rookie with the St. Louis Blues. His 59 points over just 45 regular season games was impressive in 1981-82 but it was his performance in the Stanley Cup playoffs that began the road to an eventual spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Mullen and Bernie Federko both led the Blues with 18 points over 10 playoff games in 1981-82. St. Louis took out the Winnipeg Jets in the opening round before falling in six games to the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round. 12 of Joe’s 18 points came over just four games in the best of five opening round. In the series clinching game four, he had a goal and four assists for five points in a St. Louis 8-2 win.
The three time Stanley Cup champion honed his winning ways in the CHL with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles. In 1979-80 and 1980-81, he led the team to consecutive championships. In his first year, he was named CHL rookie of the year. In the second, he was league MVP while also leading the CHL with 117 points.
Between 1979-80 and 1996-97, Joe Mullen appeared in 1,062 regular season and 143 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Blues, Calgary Flames, Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins. He won a Stanley Cup with Calgary and two more with the Penguins. Mullen was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000.
