Details

Jim Neilson was EPHL Rookie of the Year in 1961-62, playing for the Kitchener-Waterloo Beavers. Over 70 regular season games, he scored nine and assisted on 33 for 42 points. It was his only year of minor league hockey between his junior career with the Prince Albert Mintos and his lengthy career in the NHL.

1964-65 was Jim’s only season without a goal in the NHL. His career best came a few years later when he scored ten for the New York Rangers in 1968-69. Of those ten, two were game winners, including one of two goals he scored against the Boston Bruins on March 23, 1969 at Madison Square Garden.

In that game, he scored his eighth of the season early in the second period, just over a minute after Derek Sanderson had put the Bruins up 1-0. 28 seconds into the third frame, Neilson struck again, putting one past Gerry Cheevers with help from Vic Hadfield and Jean Ratelle to make the score 3-2 for the Rangers. New York went on to win 4-2 with Jim added an assist for a three point game.

Between 1962-63 and 1977-78, Jim Neilson played 1,023 regular season and 65 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, California Golden Seals and Cleveland Barons. He also played 35 games in the WHA with the Edmonton Oilers in 1978-79.
