Details

Jean Ratelle was the recipient of the Lady Byng Trophy in 1971-72 when he totaled 109 points over just 63 games while sitting just two minor penalties. He would win again in 1975-76 in a split season between the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins. On eight occasions, he was in the top five for voting for the award.

Getting to his Rangers team leading 94 points in 1972-73, Ratelle had four 4-point games along the way. Included in those four games was Jean’s only hat trick of the season. On New Year’s Eve at Madison Square Garden, he put two past starting St. Louis Blues goalie Bob Johnson and one past Jacques Caron. He also assisted on a Rod Gilbert goal in the 6-1 win. Ed Giacomin was kept busy in the Rangers nets, turning away 36 of 37 shots.

Between 1960-61 and 1980-81, Jean Ratelle played 1,281 regular season and 123 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins. He twice surpassed the 100 point plateau and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985. Ratelle’s number 19 was retired by the Rangers in 2018.
