Details
The Toronto Maple Leafs had a unique tandem of goaltenders in 1971-72 with Jacques Plante mentoring a young Bernie Parent. Bernie took the reigns as the number one for the Buds but Jacques still appeared in 34 games. However, Parent was gone to the Philadelphia Blazers of the WHA for the start of the 1972-73 NHL season and Plante would get sent to the Boston Bruins midway through that same season.
1972-73 was the finale for Plante’s NHL career. He appeared in 32 games for the Maple Leafs but the Buds chose to go with youth, sticking with rookie goalies Ron Low and Gord McRae while trading Jacques to the Bruins. With Boston, Plante played in eight games, putting up a brilliant 2.00 goals against average with two shutouts.
Between 1952-53 and 1972-73, Jacques Plante appeared in 837 regular season and 112 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. He came back for a season of WHA hockey in 1974-75 with the Edmonton Oilers. Jacques was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978.
