Card Notes

Jacques retired from hockey in 1965, but St. Louis talked him into returning to pro hockey this year, and already is proving he still is one of the NHL’s top goalies.

Jacques has won Vezina Trophy six times.

Details

Jacques Plante did retire after the 1964-65 National Hockey League season, his second with the New York Rangers. After missing 1965-66, 1966-67 and 1967-68, Plante returned to the league with a bang as a member of the St. Louis Blues.

Indeed, he had won the Vezina Trophy six times prior to the 1968-69 season, all as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. In 1968-69, he would team up with Glenn Hall to share the Vezina for his seventh and last time. For Hall, it was the third and last time his name would be engraved on the trophy.

His ‘second’ NHL career would last five years, between 1968-69 and 1972-73. Plante would play for the Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. After another ‘retirement’, not playing in 1973-74, Jacques would have one final curtain call as goaltender with the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association in 1974-75.
