ERROR – the Chicago Blackhawks selected J.P. Bordeleau in the first round of the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft, 13th overall, not the Montreal Canadiens. He was drafted out of the Montreal Junior Canadiens, possibly the source of O-Pee-Chee’s confusion.
Jean-Pierre’s brother Christian played 205 regular season and 19 playoff games in the NHL between 1968-69 and 1971-72 with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks. He played in the WHA for the league’s existence from 1972-73 to 1978-79 with the Winnipeg Jets and Quebec Nordiques.
Younger brother Paulin played 183 regular season and five playoff games in the NHL between 1973-74 and 1975-76, all with the Vancouver Canucks. He also played 234 regular season and 31 playoff games in the World Hockey Association between 1976-77 and 1978-79 with the Nordiques before a lengthy career in France.
In 1971-72 as a member of the Dallas Black Hawks in the Central Hockey League, J.P. tied for first in goal scoring with Gregg Sheppard and Ross Perkins, all with 41 goals apiece. He then led Dallas with ten playoff goals, leading the team to a championship.
Not a high scoring winger, Bordeleau reached a career high of 15 goals in four different seasons. However, in a January 14, 1976 road game against the California Golden Seals, J.P. did all the scoring for the Blackhawks.
The lowly Seals were up 2-0 with less than two minutes left in the second period on goals by Len Frig and Wayne Merrick. Bordeleau scored at 18:04 of the second, assisted by Pit Martin and Dale Tallon. He scored again on Gilles Meloche at 5:37 of the third, assisted by Martin and Dennis Hull and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Between 1969-70 and 1979-80, J.P. Bordeleau played 519 regular season and 48 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Chicago Blackhawks. His best season offensively came in 1977-78 when he totaled 40 points on 15 goals and 25 assists.
