En Français

Seulement un défenseur torontois, Borje Salming, produisit plus de points qu’Ian l’an dernier. Ian se sert bien de sa grande taille et manie la rondelle avec assurance. Ne craint pas les mises en échec.

Details

The battle between Turnbull and Salming for the top offensive defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1975-76 was as close as it gets. Turnbull had 56 points while Salming had a single point more. However, Borje played two more games than Ian so things were pretty much even.

In 1976-77, Turnbull made his mark on the game. Ian set the modern day NHL record for most goals by a blue liner on February 2, 1977 against the Detroit Red Wings. He scored five goals on five shots, a record that remains today. In 1976-77, Turnbull totaled 79 points, a franchise record that has stood the test of time.

At the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft, Ian was one of three first round picks by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Lanny McDonald was taken fourth overall, Bob Neely was picked tenth and Turnbull was selected 16th. He came out of the Ottawa 67’s and was also a sixth round pick by the Vancouver Blazers in the WHA draft.

Between 1973-74 and 1982-83, Ian Turnbull appeared in 628 regular season and 55 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins. With the Kings on December 12, 1981, he took a serious shot at his own record. Turnbull scored four goals on Glen Hanlon for L.A. in a 7-5 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
