Card Notes

Another of the talented young skaters with which the Leafs have built their club the last two years. Only a rookie last season, Ian played in all 78 games for the Leafs and raised eyebrows all around the league with solid play both offensively and defensively. The season’s experience should help him considerably for 1974-75, and the Leafs feel he is a coming star. Ian is a strong skater and good stickhandler.

Details

1974-75 was a bit of letdown for Ian Turnbull. Due to injuries, the sophomore defenseman appeared in just 22 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, along with an eight game conditioning stint in the CHL with the Oklahoma City Blazers.

Turnbull came back strong in 1975-76, scoring 20 goals from the blue line and totaling 56 points. In the post season, Ian added eleven points in ten games, second on the team only to Darryl Sittler‘s 12 points. Toronto took out the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening round before falling to the Philadelphia Flyers in a seven game set with each game won by the home team.

After going without a point in his first nine NHL games, Turnbull took flight in an October 30, 1973 game against the Detroit Red Wings at Maple Leafs Gardens. The rookie defenseman scored the first goal of the game on Doug Grant just 14 seconds into the second period, assisted by Borje Salming and Jim McKenny. It turned out to be the game winner in a 7-0 victory. He also assisted on a Ron Ellis goal five and half minutes later.

Between 1973-74 and 1982-83, Ian Turnbull played 628 regular season and 55 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins. His five goals in a February 2, 1977 game against the Red Wings stands today as an NHL record for the most goals by a defenseman in a single game.
