Details

Greg Malone was the winner of the Michel Briere Trophy in 1976-77, an award that had been handed out since the 1967-68 NHL season to the rookie of the year for the Pittsburgh Penguins. In that rookie campaign, Malone scored 18 and assisted on 19 for 37 points over 66 games.

It took until his 12th game with the Penguins to score his first NHL goal. That marker came in a November 5, 1976 road game against the Colorado Rockies, a 4-1 win. At 10:13 of the third period, Malone put one past Colorado goalie Michel Plasse with assists going to Bob Kelly and Blair Chapman.

Malone served as captain of the Oshawa Generals in 1975-76, his third and final year with the club. The Penguins selected him in the second round of the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft, 19th overall and Greg jumped right to the NHL for the 1976-77 NHL season without time spent in the minors.

1978-79 would see Malone put up the first of his two NHL hat tricks. On March 28, 1979 in a 7-1 victory over the New York Rangers at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, Greg scored his 30th, 31st and 32nd goals of the season. He would go on to a career high of 35 that year.

Between 1976-77 and 1986-87, Greg Malone played 704 regular season and 20 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques. He had three 20+ goal seasons in the NHL, two with the Penguins and one with with the Whalers.
