Card Notes

Regarded by many experts as the greatest hockey player of all-time, Gordie has averaged 69 points per season in his 8 seasons in the NHL. During the past 4 seasons he led the league in total points and in 3 of these was the top goal scorer. Gordie came up to Detroit in 1946 after 1 year in the minors. His greatest year was 1952-53 with 49 goals and 46 assists for 95 points.

Details

Ironically, 1954-55 was one of Gordie Howe’s lowest production seasons with just 62 points over 64 games. He would bounce back in 1955-56 with a 79 point campaign. The year after that, he would put up 89 points for the Detroit Red Wings to win his 5th Art Ross Trophy.

Between 1950-51 and 1953-54, Howe indeed was the scoring leader in the National Hockey League, taking four consecutive Art Ross Trophy wins. He would go on to win the trophy six times. Only Wayne Gretzky has won the award more times with ten. Mario Lemieux equaled Gordie’s six.

The 49 goals he put up in 1952-53, as noted on the back of the card, would remain a career best over his lengthy NHL career. However, he would top the points total in 1968-69 with 103. His lowest goal total over the 22 seasons between 1949-50 and 1970-71 was 23.

Between 1946-47 and 1970-71, along with the 1979-80 season, Gordie Howe appeared 1,767 regular season and 157 playoff games in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers. In between, he played 419 regular season and 78 playoff games in the World Hockey Association from 1973-74 to 1978-79 with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers.
