Details

It’s amazing that they were already calling Gordie Howe one of hockey’s “immortals” in 1954-55 after just his eighth season in the NHL. If he retired at that point, he would be a legend. Of course, he didn’t retire at the point and carried on in major league hockey until 1979-80.

Howe would not get his fifth consecutive Art Ross Trophy in 1954-55, finishing fifth with 62 points while missing six games during the regular season. However, in the post season, Gordie went on a tear. Over eleven games, he scored nine and assisted on eleven for 20 points, leading the Red Wings to their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship.

Three of his nine goals were game winners, including the Cup clinching goal in a game seven win over the Montreal Canadiens in the final series. On April 14, 1955 at Detroit Olympia, Howe scored on Montreal goalie Jacques Plante with eleven seconds left in the second period, assisted by Marcel Pronovost, to make the score 2-0. The teams would trade goals in the third with 3-1 the final score.

In the series, Detroit won the first two games before the Habs came back with two straight of their own. In game 5 at Olympia, Howe took matters into his own hands, scoring three of Detroit’s goals in a 5-1 win. His first of three made the score 2-1 and was the game winner. His second was on the power play and third was scored shorthanded, both assisted by Ted Lindsay.

Between 1946-47 and 1979-80, Gordie Howe played 1,767 regular season and 157 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers. He also appeared in 419 regular season and 78 playoff games in the WHA between 1973-74 and 1978-79 with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers.

Gordie would win the Art Ross Trophy two more times for a career total of six. The four-time Stanley Cup champion also took home the Hart Trophy six times. In 1972, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
