Details
Gordie Howe’s 95 points over 70 games in 1952-53 included a pair of five point performances. On February 1, 1953, he scored two and assisted on three for five points in a 5-1 win over Harry Lumley and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Just over a month later, on March 5, 1953, he put up the same numbers, this time in a 7-1 win over the New York Rangers. His second goal was a shorthanded penalty shot marker with Alex Delvecchio in the box for holding.
The 95 points broke Howe’s own NHL record of 86, a number he put up in the two previous seasons. Dickie Moore of the Montreal Canadiens would up the record to 96 in 1958-59. Many years later, Gordie would have a career best 103 points in 1968-69 but his 49 goals in 1952-53 would be the most he’d get in a single NHL season.
Between 1946-47 and 1979-80, Mr. Hockey played 1,767 regular season and 157 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings and Hartford Whalers. He also appeared in 419 regular season and 78 playoff games in the WHA with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers between 1973-74 and 1978-79.
Gordie was a six time winner of both the Art Ross Trophy and Hart Trophy while winning four Stanley Cup championships with Detroit. Howe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
