When Terry Sawchuk was shipped to the Boston Bruins for the 1955-56 and 1956-57 seasons, rookie Glenn Hall was thrust into the number one role in Detroit. Over both those campaigns, Hall played all 70 regular season games for the Red Wings.
In 1955-56, Hall was awarded the Calder Trophy as top rookie, putting up a 2.10 goals against average with an amazing 12 shutouts. He also played all ten playoff games for Detroit with the team reaching the Stanley Cup final before falling to the Montreal Canadiens. Interestingly, Glenn didn’t get any consideration for the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP.
His first shutout of the year (2nd of his career) came just five games into the 1955-56 season, a 6-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Olympia. It was a relatively easy night for Hall facing just 16 shots. Ted Lindsay scored the winning goal just 38 seconds into the game, assisted by Gordie Howe and Earl Reibel. Ted Lindsay had the Gordie Howe Hat Trick with a goal, assist and a third period fight with Jimmy Thomson.
On July 23, 1957, Hall was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks with Ted Lindsay for Hank Bassen, Forbes Kennedy, Johnny Wilson and Ray Preston. It was with the Hawks where Hall truly developed into a Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender.
Between 1952-53 and 1970-71, Glenn Hall appeared in 906 regular season and 115 playoff games in the National Hockey League, including a goaltending record 502 consecutive. Along with the Red Wings and Blackhawks, Glenn also played four years with the St. Louis Blues. Hall was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.
