Details
First off, the only thing you can say about a ten year NHL veteran is “First Team All-Star as a Junior”? Shame on you, O-Pee-Chee!
However, they didn’t lie. Gilles Marotte was a First Team All-Star defenseman in 1964-65 as a member of the Niagara Falls Flyers. Technically, he was tied with Jim McKenny of the Toronto Marlboros. The other First Team blue liner was Bobby Orr of the Oshawa Generals.
That year, Marotte had 37 points in 52 regular season games for Niagara Falls. The team finished first overall with a ten point cushion over the second place Marlboros. The were also J. Ross Robertson Trophy winners in the playoffs. They moved on to take down the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Memorial Cup final.
1975-76 would Marotte’s final season with the New York Rangers. He would play 47 games with the St. Louis Blues in 1976-77, his last in the NHL. Gilles spent 1977-78 in the WHA, split between the Cincinnati Stingers and Indianapolis Racers before calling it a career.
