Details
Gilles Marotte was never selected as an NHL All-Star but he did represent the Los Angeles Kings at the 1972-73 NHL All-Star Game. The Kings also had Bob Berry, Terry Harper and Rogie Vachon playing for the West Division. The game was played at Madison Square Garden on January 30, 1973 with the East winning 5-4 on a late goal by Bobby Schmautz.
Marotte came to the Chicago Blackhawks via a May 15, 1967 trade that also sent Pit Martin and Jack Norris to the Hawks in exchange for Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield. He spent two full years with Chicago before a mid-season trade in 1969-70 sent him to Los Angeles.
Despite playing just 51 games with the Bruins in 1965-66, Gilles was third in voting for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year. In a tight race for the award, Marotte was behind winner Brit Selby and runner-up Bert Marshall with Bernie Parent and Garry Peters also in the running.
In his first year with Chiago, Marotte had zero goals and 21 assists over 73 regular season games. The numbers increased in 1968-69 to five goals and 34 points over 68 games. One of those five goals was a game winner on November 20, 1968 against the Minnesota North Stars. Gilles scored at 4:55 of the first period on Minnesota goalie Cesare Maniago, assisted by Stan Mikita and Doug Jarrett. It was all the Hawks would need in a 2-0 road win.
Between 1965-66 and 1976-77, Gilles Marotte played 808 regular season and 29 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues. He also appeared in 73 WHA games in 1977-78 with the Cincinnati Stingers and Indianapolis Racers.
