Details

1979-80 was the finale of Gerry’s NHL career. Cheevers certainly went out in style. He didn’t bring the Boston Bruins another Stanley Cup but put up numbers reminiscent of those championship seasons. He was tied for second in the league with four shutouts, equaling Bob Sauve and Rogie Vachon, all two behind leader Tony Esposito.

Gerry’s 2.81 goals against average was the sixth best in the league. Him and Gilles Gilbert were runners-up to Don Edwards and Bob Sauve for the Vezina Trophy. Cheevers played all ten playoff games for the Bruins as they fell to the New York Islanders in the quarter-final after taking out the Pittsburgh Penguins in the preliminary round.

The final NHL shutout for Cheevers came on March 1, 1980 in a home game at Boston Garden against the Los Angeles Kings. A relatively easy night for Gerry, he turned away all 22 shots while Mario Lessard allowed four goals on 37 shots for the Kings. A scoreless game until 3:02 of the second period, Brad McCrimmon scored the game winning goal, assisted by Terry O’Reilly.

Between 1961-62 and 1979-80, Gerry Cheevers played in 418 regular season and 88 playoff games in the National Hockey League. He appeared in just two games with the Toronto Maple Leafs before spending the rest of his NHL career with Boston. Gerry played in the WHA with the Cleveland Crusaders between 1972-73 and 1975-76. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985.
