Card Notes
One of hockey’s quickest wits, Gerry Cheevers plays with an unorthodox style. He’ll leap to catch the puck and often leaves the crease, but still gets the job done. He now wears a mask after several years without one.
Details
1968-69 turned out to be the busiest year of his NHL career for Gerry Cheevers. His 52 regular season games played was a career high, although he equaled or topped that total in each of his three full years with the Cleveland Crusaders in the WHA.
That year, he put up three shutouts for the Boston Bruins. Perhaps, the hardest earned of the three came in a game against the Montreal Canadiens. On December 21, 1968 at the Montreal Forum, Cheevers turned away all 34 shots put his way. However, Tony Esposito stopped all 41 at the other end of the ice and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Each team was looking for their 18th win of the 1968-69 season but neither would get it.
In the 1968-69 post season, Gerry equaled his regular season shutout mark. In a first round sweep of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Cheevers and the Bruins outscored the Buds 17-0 in the first two games. Combined, he made 62 saves for the pair of blanks.
In the second round, he again had a 34 save shutout against the Canadiens, this time the result was a 5-0 win. Phil Esposito was in on all five for Boston with two goals and three assists. His first of the game and seventh of the playoffs at 3:37 of the first on Gump Worsley and assisted by Bobby Orr stood as the game winner.
Between 1961-62 and 1979-80, Gerry Cheevers played in 418 regular season and 88 playoff games in the National Hockey League. He appeared in just two games with the Toronto Maple Leafs before spending the rest of his NHL career with Boston. Gerry played in the WHA with the Cleveland Crusaders between 1972-73 and 1975-76. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985.
