Card Notes

Prior to last season, most of Gary’s professional experience came in the Central Hockey League with Kansas City. He was one of several fine goalies owned by the St. Louis Blues and never really got a full shot in the NHL. Los Angeles drafted Gary in June of 1971, and the Kings feel that he and Rogatien Vachon can combine to make one of the combos.

Details

With the St. Louis Blues, Gary Edwards was limited to one full game in 1969-70, a 4-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to that, he played a grand total of just under four minutes in a December 11, 1968 6-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks that also saw Glenn Hall and Jacques Plante appear in the St. Louis nets.

Edwards was the number one goalie for the Kings in 1971-72. However, starting in 1972-73, Rogie Vachon would take over that role. Gary recorded his first of ten NHL shutouts on October 21, 1971 7-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at the Spectrum. He made 34 saves, including six off the stick of Simon Nolet.

However, not long after, Edwards was in for the duration in an 11-2 loss to the Bruins at Boston Garden. Gary faced 35 shots and was pounded by the duo of Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito. Orr had three goals and three assists for six points while Esposito had a five point game on two goals and three assists.

Between 1968-69 and 1981-82, Gary Edwards appeared in 286 regular season and eleven playoff games in the National Hockey League with the St. Louis Blues, Los Angeles Kings, Cleveland Barons, Minnesota North Stars, Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins. In 1981-82, he would make his return to St. Louis, appearing in ten games for the Blues as backup for Mike Liut.
