Details

I do believe there was a little sarcasm in the info snippet of this 1967-68 Topps Gary Doak rookie card. Goderich, Ontario is a lovely place but not a huge producer of pro hockey players. There was Al Dewsbury, a veteran of 357 regular season and 15 playoff games in the NHL between 1946-47 and 1955-56 with the Red Wings and Blackhawks. And, there was Larry Jeffrey who played 368 regular season and 38 playoff games in the NHL between 1961-62 and 1968-69 with the Red Wings, Maple Leafs and Rangers. That’s about it.

Doak played his junior hockey with the Hamilton Red Wings and spent time with the Pittsburgh Hornets, a Detroit affiliate, before playing his first NHL games with the Wings in 1965-66. However, after just four games with the club, he was traded to the Boston Bruins on February 16, 1966 with Bill Lesuk and Ron Murphy for Leo Boivin and Dean Prentice. He would return to Detroit in 1972-73 but that stint would last just 44 games before again being traded to Boston.

Again, with the 1967-68 Topps cards, the back is deceiving and could be called an ERROR. It states that Doak had not played in the NHL. However, going into that 1967-68 NHL season, he had 53 games under his belt, mostly with the Bruins. 29 of those games were played in 1966-67.

Between 1965-66 and 1980-81, Gary Doak played 789 regular season and 78 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Red Wings, Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers. He was a Stanley Cup champion with Boston in 1969-70.
