Details
Gary Bergman got his break in the NHL when he was picked up by the Detroit Red Wings. He became a regular in 1964-65 and never looked back. In the 1965-66 Stanley Cup playoffs, Gary played in all 12 games for Detroit as the fourth place Red Wings took out the second seed Chicago Blackhawks before bowing to the Montreal Canadiens in the final.
Bergman and the rest of the Detroit defense gave Montreal all they had with the series going six games and the Canadiens only outscoring the Red Wings 18-14. Detroit went up 2-0 in the series before the Habs roared back with four straight wins. The final game went to overtime before Detroit stepped aside.
Gary played 838 regular season and 21 playoff games in the NHL between 1964-65 and 1975-76 with the Red Wings, Minnesota North Stars and Kansas City Scouts. He played all eight games for Canada at the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.
