Fred was the “man of the hour” last spring when the Flyers became the first post-1967 team to win the Stanley Cuyp playoffs. He brought topnotch minor league coaching with him to Philadelphia, and his techniques have always been new and successful. Fred journeyed to Russia last summer to study Russian hockey methods. As a player, he was a defenseman with the N.Y. Rangers.

Fred Shero certainly had a secret for success. Along with two Stanley Cup championships in the NHL behind the bench with the Philadelphia Flyers, he coached teams to playoff titles in the IHL, CPHL and AHL. Along with the two wins with the Flyers, he led that team and the New York Rangers to the finals.
The card shows his three seasons in the NHL with the Rangers. However, Shero played some form of pro hockey from 1943-44 to 1957-58 in the EHL, AHL, USHL, PCHL, WHL and QHL. In 1952-53 and 1953-54, Fred helped the Cleveland Barons to consecutive Calder Trophy championships in the AHL. The blue liner topped out in 1953-54 with 21 goals and 53 points.
Shero was coach of the year in three different leagues. He won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award in 1969-70, coaching the Buffalo Bisons to an AHL title. The following year, he was honoured with the Jake Milford Trophy while leading the Omaha Knights to a CHL title. Of course, he won the Jack Adams Award in 1973-74 with the Flyers.
