Details

Errol Thompson’s 13 power play goals in 1975-76 put him in a five-way tie for eleventh in the NHL with Jean Pronovost, Garry Unger, Gary Dornhoefer and John Bucyk, six behind leader Phil Esposito. The 13 were part of a career high of 43 goals for Thompson.

Included in the 43 was his second of five career hat tricks, recorded on January 24, 1975 at Pacific Coliseum in a 5-5 tie with the Vancouver Canucks. With the Leafs down 4-2 late in the second period, Errol scored three straight to give his team a 5-4 lead. Harold Snepsts scored late for Vancouver for the tie. Errol also assisted on a shorthanded goal by George Ferguson, one of three shorties scored in the match.

1976-77 would be a tough year for Thompson. He appeared in just 41 regular season games but still managed 21 goals, on pace for another 40 goal campaign if he’d played the full schedule. Included was a hat trick in a crazy 10-8 win over the Chicago Blackhawks (see above for more details).

Between 1970-71 and 1980-81, Errol Thompson played 599 regular season and 34 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. He would record 20+ goals in seven seasons with his second best in 1979-80 with 34 as a member of the Red Wings.
